Madhya Pradesh is said to be the heart of India as it is just there is the middle of the country. Bhopal is the capital of this state, and it is also known as the ‘City of Lakes.’


Van Vihar National Park: This is located at the heart of the city and covers an area of 445.21 hectares of land. This National Park is home to a wide range of birds and animals. Some of the wild animals found here include tiger, lion, leopard, sambar and chital. The beauty of this park is, it showcases over 200 species of birds. With Upper Lake on one side and Shyamala Hills on the other side, this forest is a perfect treat to watch and one can experience a jungle safari as well.

Bhimbetka: This is located about 46 kilometres from Bhopal city, and it is a World Heritage Site. These caves were found in the year 1957-58. It was discovered by Dr. Vishnu Wakankar, who was an archaeologist. These are a heritage as rock paintings which were done in the caves long back almost 1500 years ago. They tell the lifestyle and stories of human life who used to live in that historic age. The paintings on the ceilings and the walls of the caves are brilliant examples of artwork. The paintings represent various periods like upper Palaeolithic Age till Medieval period.

Toranmal: This place is about 8 hours drive from the city of Bhopal and the distance needed to be covered is 55 kilometres. This place is situated in the Satpura Range of mountains and Toranmal is actually surrounded by seven hills around it. One can visit the famous Gorakshanath Temple, Lotus Lake and Yashwant Lake here. This place is rarely visited and many people do not come here. That is why; this place is less crowded.



Upper Lake: This beautiful lake is there from 11th century, and is said to be the largest lake in the entire state. Local people believe that, the lake water has magical powers and it also helps to cure skin diseases. The lake is located in the middle of the city. This is a manmade lake which has a small island at the centre. There is a boat club which has the facility to lend boats to the visitors. There are rowing boats, speed boats and paddle boats. Watching sun set here is a beautiful experience.

Bhojpur: This place is located about 30 kilometres away from Bhopal and it is located at the banks of Betwa River. Here lies the famous Bhojeswar Temple which was built in the 11th century and it has the largest Shiva Linga in the entire India. This Linga is sculptured in a single rock and the height of it is 18 feet. There is also a statue of Lord Mahavir which is 6 meter tall and also a statue of Lord Parshvanath.
